‘L'Antica Scuderia del Castello’, is now an ‘Agriturismo’ Bed and Breakfast holiday home managed by the granddaughter of a previous castle owner. Barbara, our hostess, offers accommodation for diverse groups , offering bed and breakfast for families and small groups of up to 11 people. It is also possible from this summer to book half board or full board at All'Antica Scuderia, as we have an agreement with a local Trattoria. ‘L'Antica Scuderia del Castello’ comprises four very spacious rooms: two doubles (Maggiociondolo and Ciliegio) and there is a three bedroom suite (Liberty) which has been designed for people with special needs. There is also a single room (Mirto) which can be connected to one or both of the double rooms. Each room is decorated with period furniture and has private bathrooms with the exception of Mirto which can be adjoined to either of the other rooms. The nearest important town is San Daniele which sits high on the hill overlooking woods, fields and plains. It is internationally known for its library ‘La Biblioteca Guarneriana’. Established in 1466, it is famous for its priceless collection of over 160 rare manuscripts some of which date back to the 12th century (the most famous being Dante’s 14th century manuscript of the Divine Comedy). San Daniele is also home to the church of Sant’ Antonio with the late medieval frescoes by Pellegrino da San Daniele. ‘ L'Antica Scuderia del Castello” is situated about one and a half hours’ drive north of Venice. It is one hour from Ronchi Trieste airport and a half hour drive from Udine Train Station which is located near the ancient outer wall of the Udine city. During the long summer days there will be plenty of time for riding and relaxing or doing some local sightseeing. The surrounding area, with its numerous villages, churches and castles, is steeped in ancient history. Within short driving distance you can explore other important places including; Cividale – Caesar’s favourite town, Aquiliea – famous for its mosaics and roman ruins, Palmanova – the nine point star fortress town built by the Venetians, and of course splendid ‘working’ castles including Castle Susans, Villalta, Colloredo and the privately owned Arcano which is located near the beautifully maintained golf course near the village of Fagagna. The fabulous Miramare and Duino Castles are on the coastline of the Trieste Bay, a mere fifty minute drive away. For those who want to try their hand at learning this region’s culinary traditions our hostess, Barbara, can organise cooking classes at a local trattoria. For those who want to live italian and speak italian ‘Conversazione e Cafe’ classes are available. For ‘assagiatori d'olio’ Barbara and her Danish husband David, will happily organise a tour of their olive groves and local ‘frantoio’ where lucky oil lovers might savour the most pure of virgin oils on local ’pane’ or in the tiniest of ‘chucchiaini’.
