Het Steen (Antwerp, Belgium)

Het Steen is a Medieval castle and the oldest building in the Belgian city of Antwerp. It was constructed between 1200 and 1225 and stands close to the river Schelde where its position enabled it to control access to the river. It was originally called Antwerp Castle but the name was changed in the 1500s following an extensive rebuilding programme and it became known as Het Steen (or The Stone). For over 500 years Het Steen was used as a prison where the guilty awaited sentencing with the rich in one wing and the poor in another less luxurious part of the building. The remaining building contains a shipping museum, with outside on display on the quay some real old canal barges. Since 1890 ‘Het Steen’ has been an archeological museum and since 1952 it has housed the Antwerp maritime history collection and a memorial to Canadian troops from the Second World War. Entrance fees apply to enter the museum exhibits but visitors can wander through parts of Het Steen day and night.
