Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse (South Portland, USA)

Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse in South Portland was built to help ships navigate around a dangerous ledge west of Portland harbour that had damaged numerous ships. The work on the cast iron caisson lighthouse started in 1896 and on May 24th, 1897 the lighthouse begun its long service. In the beginning the lighthouse was illuminated by kerosene, since 1934 it is electrified. The lighthouse rises 54ft above ground and, unlike many others of this type, can be reached by a short walk along the breakwater. Since 1998 it is managed by the Spring Point Ledge Light Trust, it still marks the entrance to Portland harbour and, now powered by solar energy. remains in service. The lighthouse is open to the public on weekends during summer and visitors are welcome to explore its interior. For exact dates of the open house days please check the website or enquire per phone. Please note that small children are not admitted due to safety reasons and that the access to the lighthouse is via a long and steep ladder.
