    Battery Park (New York, USA)

Battery Park is 25-acre green space at the southern tip of Manhattan. The name is taken from artillery batteries built here by Dutch and British colonial authorities to protect the island and its inhabitants from invasion. Castle Clinton, built in the first decade of the 19th century as a D-shaped waterfront fort, is the park’s principal feature. It has served a variety of roles, including cultural center, immigrant reception facility, and city aquarium. Restored to its original construction, it is now as a national monument and acts as the reception/ticket center for visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The Castle is also a research center on immigration. The Battery Conservancy sponsored construction of the 10,000-sq ft Gardens of Remembrance, which features over 100 plant varieties (featuring hybrid and native plants) presenting through all four seasons. Other gardens are planned. The park is also the site of several monuments and memorials, including the New York Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Immigrants memorial, the Norwegian Maritime Monument, the American Merchant Mariners’ Memorial, the Coast Guard Memorial, and the East Coast Military Memorial.
