Hogarth's House in Chiswick (Hounslow, United Kingdom)

Hogarth’s House in Chiswick, west London, is now in a suburb but in the 18th century was in the country. It was the painter Hogarth’s country retreat from 1749 until his death in 1764, his London house being in Leicester Square. The house was closed for refurbishment in 2008 but was damaged by fire in 2009 which delayed the re-opening until November 2011. The new exhibition space depicts Hogarth’s life and times, especially his concern for the poor which is seen in his most famous engraving “Gin Alley” and his fostering of foundling children. There is a rotating display of some of his paintings and engravings, and a study archive. The interiors are furnished in 18th century style. Outside is a walled garden which still has a mulberry tree from Hogarth’s time. The museum is owned by the London Borough of Hounslow. Admission is free. Opening hours are 12 noon to 5pm Tuesdays to Sundays, and group visits can be arranged.
