The Baha’i House of Worship is more commonly known by the name of the Lotus Temple and is one of the most unusual modern buildings in Delhi. Looking more than a little like the Sydney Opera House, this striking white marble-clad building was designed by the Iranian architect Fariburz Sahba and was opened in 1986. Sahba received an award from the Institution of Structural Engineers for designing the temple whose shape represents the opening of a white lotus flower. The Lotus Temple is the ‘mother temple’ for the Baha’i faith for the whole of India. Around the temple, visitors will find nine pools set in nearly 100 hectares of neatly manicured lawns. The Baha’i faith welcomes visitors to the temple regardless of their religious beliefs. VIsitors can view the building and attend the daily services. The Lotus Temple is reported to be the most visited building in India with over 4 million people visiting it each year. Entrance is free as is parking. The Temple is open from Monday to Saturday from 8:30 to 12:30 and from 16:00 to 19:30 and is floodlit in the evenings after dusk.
