Le Thot Prehistory Centre (Montignac, France)
A combined museum and animal park. The museum reproduces the main caves and paintings found in nearby Lascaux and explains the discoveries and preservation of that site. There are also tableaux of Cro Magnon life and displays of how minerals were extracted to make the colour for the paintings. Outside, the park is full of animals of the period, the idea being to see in real life the animals depicted in the caves. There are Przewalski horses, reindeer, bison, aurochs and a surprisingly lifelike moving model of a mammoth! As it is near Lascaux, you can buy a combined ticket (although note that the original Lascaux is closed to the public, and only Lascaux II, a reproduction, can be visited).
