Newport Harbor, Rhode Island, is an integral part of the historic city which has had a long association with the sea. It was an important naval base and until 1973 was the home of the cruiser- destroyer force. A naval training centre is still located at Newport. Known as the “sailing capital of the United States”, it hosted the America’s Cup from 1930 to 1983. Commercially a fishing fleet still operates and ferries connect with other ports and the mainland. Today the emphasis is on pleasure boating, either on yachts or on the cruise ships that dock here. Harbor tours are available, either by boat or on dry land. The Harbor Walk North passes many of the 18th century colonial homes for which Newport is famous, while Harbor Walk South covers the modern waterfront with its shops and nightlife.
Newport Harbor is one of the top attractions in Newport, known for its unique features that attract numerous visitors each year.
