Port de France (Tunis, Tunisia)

Bab Bhar (door of the sea) is more commonly called Porte de France (French Gate) by Europeans. Its Tunisian name comes from its orientation towards the sea. It marks the entrance of the Medina which it separates from the new town build by French colonists. Originally, it was part of the medina’s walls, but when they were destroyed in 1860, it was taken down and rebuilt in its current location. To the North of the gate, the rue des Glacières was the place where blocks of Alpine ice were kept during the 18th and 19th centuries.
