The Rose Parade has been held every year since January 1st 1890. Originally it was founded to celebrate the mild winter in California and designed after the “Battle of flowers” as a floral festival. Today it marks the beginning of the Tournament of Roses, a NCAA Bowl Championship Series game in which two top college football teams play against each other. Every year around 1 million spectators attend the very popular parade which is also broadcast in 150 countries worldwide and has an altogether audience of around 40 million viewers. The course of the parade runs over 5 1/2 miles (8.8 km) and starts at 8am. The starting point is located at Ellis Street and Orange Grove corner,from here it proceeds over Colorado Boulevard and Sierra Madre Boulevard and finally ends about 2 1/2 hours later in Paloma Street. Like many parades the Rose Parade also has a Grand Marshal to lead it during the ceremony. Former Grand Marshals of the Rose Parade include Walt Disney, Dwight D Eisenhower, Shirley Temple (who was the youngest Grand Marshal ever to lead the parade in 1939), Bob Hope, the Apollo 12 Astronauts, Pele, Micky Mouse and many other well-known names.
