Rutland Water Nature Reserve (Egleton, United Kingdom)

Rutland Water is one of the largest artificially created bodies of water in Europe and in terms of surface area it is the largest reservoir in England. It officially opened in 1976 and whilst the main part of the reservoir provides a wide range of different water sports, the majority of the western side of the reservoir, including its surrounding woodland, has been set aside as a nature reserve. This nature reserve is a unique partnership between Anglian Water and the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust. During the winter months Rutland Water attracts vast numbers of wildfowl (Ducks, Geese and Swans) and it has been designated as an international Special Protection Area (SPA) for its wintering populations of two Duck species, the Shoveler and Gadwall. There is a visitors centre located at the main part of the nature reserve known as Egleton Reserve and a permit to visit the reserve has to be obtained from here. The cost of a permit is as follows: Adults - £4.00 (6 Euros) Senior Citizens - £3.00 (4.5 Euros) Children (under 16) - £2.00 (3 Euros) Students - £2.00 (3 Euros) The reserve is open daily throughout the year. Between November and February it open 9am until 4pm and between March and October it is open from 9am until 5pm. Admission prices also allow access to the smaller Lyndon Reserve.
