    Saline Royale d'Arc-et-Senans (Arc-et-Senans, France)

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has been so designated as it was the ‘first major achievement of industrial architecture’. Built in 1775 by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux during the Enlightenment, it was intended to reflect the progressive and rational outlook of the time. The semi-circular design complex represented the hierarchy of work, with the director’™s place in the centre. The site was intended to be part of an ideal city but this was never realised. Salt was an important commodity at the time, and everyone over the age of eight paid a salt tax to buy an amount at a price fixed by the government. An exhibition of the history of salt can be seen in the Director’™s house. The salt works are open from 9am to 7pm with some variations through the year. Special events and exhibitions are also mounted. Further details are on the website.
