Stanley Park is located in downtown Vancouver and was established as a park in 1888. It is managed and cared for by the Vancouver Park Board. It covers an area of over 1,000 acres (405 hectares) and contains over 8.8 kilometres of footpaths. It is larger than New York’s Central Park and welcomes over 8 million visitors every year. A seawall runs along the boundary of the park and there is a footpath that runs along its entire length, which is popular with walkers and cyclists. This circular footpath is used by over 2.5 million pedestrians every year. Attractions within Stanley Park include the Vancouver Aquarium, a children’s farmyard, an open air theatre and a pitch and putt golf course. In addition to this there are also several statues and monuments and areas of mature woodland. The woodland features native trees including Western Red Cedar and Douglas Firs, which provide an important habitat for birds and mammals. Access to Stanley Park is free of charge and it is kept open during daylight hours.
