The Winter Gardens (Margate, United Kingdom)
The Winter Gardens is a concert and exhibition hall in Margate, Kent. It hosts plays, operas, musicals and concerts as well as being available for corporate and private hire. Dating from 1910, this theatre was one of the leaders in civic-organised entertainment for visitors, as the British seaside holiday market developed. It has seen appearances by household names over the decades, including Nelly Melba, Laurel and Hardy, Vera Lynn and the Beatles right up to current day celebrities like Jedward. Alterations in 1978, which allowed it to be reconfigured as an exhibition space, gave it flexibility of use and were partly responsible for its survival when similar seaside theatres closed down. The Main Hall has a capacity of up to 1900 people, while the smaller Queens Hall, used for smaller events like cabarets or private functions, can take 600. Disabled visitors can be accommodated and details are on the website.
