Topsail Island Beaches (Topsail Beach, USA)

Topsail Island’s public beaches run the length of the island. The beaches are composed of the fine, light sands characteristic of barrier islands along the East Coast of the United States. The island’s beaches run adjacent to the communities of Topsail Beach, Surf City, and North Topsail Beach, with the depth of the beach tending to widen as it moves south. The Topsail beaches are serviced by two commercial piers, one at Surf City and the other at Topsail Beach. Topsail’s beaches offer sanctuary and nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles. Despite restrictions designed to protect nests and turtles alike, residents and visitors have initimate access to nesting areas–and community involvement in monitoring the turtles is encouraged. These beaches provide a repository for a variety of Atlantic shells and for millions of fossiled shark teeth that wash ashore with the tides. The public beaches of Topsail Island are not governed by a single unified authority, but rather are subject to a variety of local, state, and federal jurisdictions.
