Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire has a history that dates back to 1711 when Queen Anne founded it. It is recognised as one of the UK’s most important racecourses and hosts 9 out of the 32 annual group 1 races, a number that is matched only by the racecourse at Newmarket. Located just 6 miles from Windsor Castle, Ascot has a long association with the Royal Family and it is on land that is part of the Crown Estate. 25 days of racing are held throughout the year with the centrepiece being Royal Ascot, which dates right back to 1711. HM Queen Elizabeth II and other prominent members of the British Royal Family attend Royal Ascot each year. Ascot Racecourse underwent a £185 million refurbishment between September 2004 and June 2006, during which it was closed. It was officially re-opened by Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006.
