Burgh Castle is a Roman fortress situated on a low cliff above the Waveney estuary in the village with the same name. The fortress was built during the 3rd century AD and is believed to be, either alone or together with the Roman site in Caister, to be the settlement “Gariannonum”. The large fortress covered 6 acres and is today one of the best preserved Roman monuments in the UK. The massive walls surrounding the site measure 3.5 metres in width and 4.5 metres in height, and were fortified with towers and catapults. The wall towards the river has collapsed into the marshlands below but all other walls are well preserved. The site was later inhabited by the Saxons and then become a monastery known as “Cnobheresburg” before it was built over with a motte-and-bailey castle by the Normans. The latter was flattened in later years and the site fell into disuse. Burgh Castle is administered by the English Heritage. Parking spaces can be found at the site, the admission is free.
