Carlisle Castle (Carlisle, United Kingdom)

The origins of Carlisle Castle can be traced back to William Rufus in 1092 although there were Roman forts in the region as early as the first century AD. It was reinforced with a stone keep by Henry I as a buffer against the Scots and was enlarged by Henry VIII. The Castle was used as a prison for Mary Queen of Scots. It was the subject of a siege during the Civil War and again in 1746 when the forces of Bonnie Prince Charlie were garrisoned there. The “licking stones” are said to have been sucked by the defenders to keep their mouths moist. The Castle is now administered by English Heritage. As well as exploring of the castle and grounds there is the “Carlisle Roman Dig”, an exhibition of finds from recent excavations. There is a gift shop on site. Opening hours (daily): 9:30am - 5pm (April - September) 10am - 4pm (October - March) Admission: Adult: £4.10 Senior, Student: £3.10 Child: £2.10 (Ticket price includes admission to the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment Museum) Parking is available at city centre car parks. Some inner parts of the castle are not accessible by wheelchair. Hadrian’s Wall Path runs along the river bank very close to the castle. A short footpath of a few hundred yards off the main Path leads to it.
