Hôtel de Ville et son Beffroi (Arras, France)

The original city hall and belfry were built in gothic style in the 15th century. Both were totally destroyed in World War I but were rebuilt to the same design between 1924 and 1932. The 75m high belfry is one of the group of belfries of northern France and Belgium which are collectively a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Lion of Arras sits at the top, part of the reconstruction, although the original was preserved and is in the museum of the Abbey of Saint Vaast. A lift takes visitors to 40m, the point where the square shape of the belfry changes to octagonal. From here there is a fine view of the city. The city hall offers guided tours of the guard room, council room and function rooms. For opening hours of both buildings see the website.
