Hylands House and Estate (Chelmsford, United Kingdom)
Hylands House and Estate are located just outside of Chelmsford City Centre and consist of a grade II listed neo-classical villa surrounded by 574 acres of parkland and gardens. The house was bought by the Chelmsford County Council in 1966 and at this time was in urgent need of restoration and repair. Although the park was opened only 10 days after the purchase it took until 2005 to completely finish the mansion, which dates back to 1730, to its former glory. Since 2005 Hylands House is open to visitors again who can marvel at the newly restored rooms of the grand house and the exhibits. The former stables of the house are nowadays home to the visitor centre, a cafe and several shops while the park and formal gardens are free to visit for all. On-site facilities include picnic areas, toilets, children’s playground, free parking facilities, cafe and several shops, events such as farmers markets are being held regularly.
