Monument to the Discoverers (Lisbon, Portugal)

This monument stands proudly on the Tagus River water front in the Belem district of Lisbon, symbolically looking out over the river on which Portugal’s historic explorers set off to conquer the world. It is a ‘must see’ stop on any tour of historic Lisbon, but not necessarily a ‘must enter’ site. The monument can be entered and there is a video presentation of the history of Lisbon available inside. However the vast majority of visitors will simply take photographs of the monument and its surroundings. It was built in 1960 as a commemoration of the death 500 years earlier of Henry the Navigator. There are carved figures up each side of the monument, which is shaped like the prow of a ship. Open Times are daily 9am to 6.30pm (July to August), 9am to 5pm (September to June); closed Mondays and it is easily accessible by bus. It is located approximately 5 minutes walk to the (much older) Belem Tower and is just across the street from the Jeronimos Monastery. The pavement in front of the monument is inlaid with maps of the world. From the waterfront, visitors can see the statue of Christ the King in the distance, behind the new bridge which spans the Tagus.
