    The Portland Observatory dates back to 1807 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2006. Sea captain-turned-entrepreneur, Lemuel Moody (1768-1846), ordered the construction of this octagonal tower to serve as a communication station for Portland’s bustling harbor. It was originally build in an area of cow pasture which has since become the centre of this bustling city. The tower stands 86 feet-high. It is open daily 10-5 and guided tours are available at a cost of $6 per adult and $4 per child
