Santa Bárbara Castle (Alicante, Spain)

Die hoch oben auf dem Felsen Benacantil thronende Festung wurde ursprünglich von den Mauren erbaut. Am 04. Dezember 1248, dem Tag der heiligen Barbara, wurde sie von Alfons X. den Mauren abgenommen und erhielt daher ihren Namen. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurde sie von den jeweiligen Besatzern Alicantes mehrfach umgebaut und verlor damit ihr einstiges Aussehen völlig. Ab 1893 fungierte sie als Gefängnis, bis Alfons XIII. sie der Stadt übergab. Öffnungszeiten: täglich 10:00 19:00 Uhr Erreichbar mit dem Auto, wenn man auf der N332 in Richtung Valencia fährt und hinter dem Yachthafen nach der Auffahrt auf die Hochstraße scharf links abbiegt, dann ein Stück geradeaus fährt, bis unterhalb des Felsens die Auffahrt nach rechts beginnt. Diese Straße ist auch als Wanderweg geeignet; der Aufstieg vom Meer her ist sehr mühsam. Am Ostende des Paseo de Gomiz befindet sich ein Fahrstuhl nach oben (2,40 Euro, für Rentner kostenlos).
