As both a zoological and botanical garden Wilhelma has a wide ranging collection. Several of its features are world-renowned: the ape and monkey colony, the aquarium, Europe’s largest magnolia grove. Special compounds and building have been created to provide sympathetic habitats for different species. In walk-through aviaries birds fly free. Nocturnal animals can be seen active in darkened conditions. The Amazon House is an enclosed 1200 square metre area recreating the conditions of the upper Amazon. There is also a “farm” area for older, endangered species such as European bison and Przewalski horses. Created in 1850 the garden was originally designed in a Moorish-style and the Moorish garden and Moorish villa are still central features. Wilhelma is a little way outside Stuttgart but is easy to reach on U-Bahn 14 from the main station.
