Arena Stage (Washington D.C., USA)
Arena Stage is a 60-year-old regional theater located along the Potomac waterfront in southwest Washington. It is housed in a newly constructed entertainment complex, the Mead Center for American Theater, which was completed in 2010. The new building has exterior surfaces features curving, reflective glass walls and has a cantilevered roof aligned toward the nearby Washington Monument. The Mead Center contains 200,000 sq ft of space and three stages, each with a different layout. The Fichandler is a theater in the round with seating for about 700 patrons. The Kreeger is built around a thrust-style stage and seats about 500. The Kogod Cradle is a so-called ‘black-box’ theater surrounded by basket-weave walls and seats about 200, and it was designed specifically to accommodate experimental theater. Aside from the three theaters, the Arena Stage complex includes a large open lobby, an in-house cafe, concession areas convenient to the various theaters, a reading room, an outdoor terrace, and an underground parking garage.
