    The Washington Monument is an obelisk located at the centre of the National Mall in Washington D C between the U S Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. It was built to commemorate George Washington who was Americas’ first president. The monument stands 555 feet 5⅛ inches (169.294 m) and is constructed from marble, granite and sandstone. Designed by Robert Mills construction began in 1848 but it was not completed until 1884 and it was not until 1888 that it was officially opened. Inside the monument a lift propels visitors to the summit where there are windows that offers views for up to 30 miles. The alternative is to climb the 897 stairs. The monument has a circle of flagpoles flying the American flag around it. Opening hours are 9:00 am. to 5:00 pm, with the last tour beginning before 4:45 pm. It is open every day except 4th July and Christmas day. The monument is free to enter but a ticket is required. This can be pre-booked for a small fee, if not queuing can start as early as 7am and tickets do run out.
