Nottingham Goose Fair (Nottingham, United Kingdom)

The Nottingham Goose Fair takes place every October and has a history that dates back more than 700 years. It is held during the first week of the month and is the second largest traveller’s fair in Britain, although it is thought to have once been the largest in Europe. The first Goose Fair took place in 1284 and it has been an annual event since the 15th century, although it was cancelled in 1646 due to the fear of Bubonic Plague and again during the First and Second World Wars. Until 1928 it was held on the Old Market Square but its increasing popularity and development of that site meant it was relocated to the Forest Recreation Ground. The name derives from the thousands of Geese that were once driven from Lincolnshire to the markets at Nottingham. It was traditionally a food market and gained a reputation for its huge array of cheese stalls, but in recent years it has become as famous for its fairground rides as it has for its food stalls. Admission to Nottingham Goose Fair is free but admission charges apply for the fairground rides.
