    Belfast Zoo was built in 1934 and covers an area of 12 acres and at the time cost Belfast Corporation (now Belfast City Council) £10,000. After the war in the 50’s and 60’s the zoo was not so popular and the corporation took control and a new zoo site was established in 1974. The zoo is located on the Antrim road about 15 minutes by car from Belfast city centre it is also accessible by train and bus. The zoo is home to over 1,200 animals and 140 species. These include Barbary lions, red kangaroos, spider monkeys, gibbons, giraffes, elephants Malayan sun bears and cheetahs to mention just a few. There is also a Bird house and a Rainforest house. Opening hours are October to March 10 am to 4 pm (weekdays) and 10 am to 7 pm (weekends) April 1 to September 30 10 am to 7 pm daily Other facilities at the Zoo include a café for hot food and kiosks for snacks, a shop, electric mobility scooters (must be booked in advance), toilets and baby changing area. Admission prices are Adult (aged 18 and above) £6.90 (7.60 euros) Child (aged four to 17) £3.50 (3.83 euros) Children under 4, disabled and pensioners are admitted free.
